Mushtaq Ahmed, the former legspinner from Pakistan, will now be the spin-bowling coach for Bangladesh until the T20 World Cup this year. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced this on Tuesday. Mushtaq will travel to Dhaka for the team's preparatory camp before their T20I series against Zimbabwe next month.
"I feel honored to join the Bangladesh cricket team as their spin bowling coach," said Mushtaq. "I am excited about this role and eager to share my experience with the players. They are receptive to coaching, and I believe they are one of the most dangerous teams. With their potential, resources, and talent, they can defeat any opponent. I aim to instill this belief in them and am thrilled to work with the team."
Mushtaq will take over from Rangana Herath, who held the position for two years since joining in June 2021. He will join head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, assistant coach Nic Pothas, batting coach David Hemp, and fast bowling coach Andre Adams in the Bangladesh coaching staff.
Previously, Mushtaq served as the spin bowling coach for the England men's team from 2008 to 2014 and had two stints with the Pakistan team: as a bowling consultant from 2014 to 2016 and as spin bowling coach from 2020 to 2022.
During his playing career, Mushtaq won the 1992 World Cup and played 144 ODIs and 52 Tests. He also excelled in county cricket, being the highest wicket-taker in 1993 and in consecutive seasons from 2003 to 2007.
Mushtaq's time with Bangladesh is short, but young players like Rishad Hossain may be excited to learn from a legendary legspinner for the first time in their careers.
